Artemis II will be the first flight with crew aboard NASA’s deep space exploration system: the Orion spacecraft, Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the ground systems at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. During their mission, four astronauts will confirm all of the spacecraft’s systems operate as designed with people aboard in the actual environment of deep space, over the course of about a 10-day mission. The Artemis II flight test will pave the way to land the first woman and next man on the Moon on Artemis III.

🌏NASA’s Artemis 2 Mission: Back to the Moon

In the last few weeks, the world watched the sky for a very special event. NASA launched the Artemis 2 mission. This is a very important mission because it is the first time in over 50 years that humans traveled to the Moon.

🌏The Mission

Artemis 2 did not land on the Moon. Instead, the spacecraft, called Orion, flew around the Moon and came back to Earth. The trip lasted about ten days. The goal was to test if the spacecraft is safe for humans before the next mission, which will actually land on the lunar surface.

🌎The Crew

There were four astronauts on board:

Reid Wiseman (the Commander)

Victor Glover (the Pilot)

Christina Koch (Mission Specialist)

Jeremy Hansen (Mission Specialist from Canada)

They are heroes because they traveled farther into space than any person in history. Victor Glover is the first person of color and Christina Koch is the first woman to go to the Moon.

🌎Why is it important?

This mission is the first step for the "Artemis Generation." NASA wants to build a base on the Moon in the future. They also want to use the Moon to learn how to send people to Mars one day.

The mission ended successfully when the Orion capsule splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. It was a great moment for science and for all people on Earth.
