The Story of Anne Frank ( classe seconda/simple past)
The Story of Anne Frank
Anne Frank was a Jewish girl, born in 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. She was tall and thin, with long dark hair and expressive dark eyes. Anne was a very special girl: she was lively, smart, and kind. She loved reading and she always had a beautiful smile.
Life Before the Secret Annex
There were four people in her family: her father Otto, her mother Edith, and her older sister Margot. The Franks were Jewish, but they were not very religious; they lived peacefully with neighbors of different faiths.
However, life changed during World War II. To escape the Nazis and their leader, Adolf Hitler, the family moved to Amsterdam, in Holland. Hitler wanted to arrest Jewish people because he believed in a "master race."
The Secret Annex
In Amsterdam, Otto Frank worked as a businessman. When the Nazi army occupied Holland, the family had to hide. They moved into a secret apartment located behind a movable bookcase in Otto’s office building.
Life in the "Secret Annex" was very difficult:
They stayed very quiet during the day so the workers downstairs did not hear them.
They could not go outside or look out of the windows.
Anne felt lonely and isolated because she could not go to school or see her friends.
Anne’s Diary and Legacy
Anne spent much of her time with Peter, a boy who lived in the secret house with his parents. For her 13th birthday, Anne received a diary. She called it "Kitty" and wrote in it every day about her feelings, her fears, and her dreams. She wanted to become a famous writer or a journalist in the future.
Sadly, in 1944, the Nazis discovered their hiding place. They arrested the family and took them to concentration camps. Anne died young, but her diary became one of the most famous books in the world, telling her story to everyone.
