The army bought Joey to work hard during the war in France.

When Albert was 18 he started to fight for his country.

The army takes Joey and takes him to France and when Albert is 18 he has to fight for his country.

Because Germany invaded Belgium and France

4. What was life like in the trenches?

Conditions in the trenches were terrible, they were cold and wet, muddy and full of rats. Soldiers had little food and nowhere to sleep

5. At what age did young men have to go and fight?

Young men had to go to fight at the age of 18.

6. What did a lot of young women do during the war?

Women didn’t fight during the war but they worked as nurses, drivers and cooks.

7. Why did the government take factories, big houses, cars and horses?

The Government took factories to produce arms (for the war), big houses to use as extra hospitals, cars and horses for war work.

8. Why did the lives of women change during the war?

Their lives changed because they had to work outside their home in factories, Offices and farms while men were fighting in France.

9. What did the government do so that people thought the war was going well?

The government censored soldiers’ letters and newspapers so people didn’t know what was happening there.
